![]() ![]() I've had this conversation time and time again and I am tired of explaining the cultural, historical and societal issues that have led us here. I don't know a single person of colour in England that hasn't went through something, and you might not think you're part of the problem because you've never racially abused someone, but there's more to it than that. Racism is still an issue in the UK, as much as people don't like to admit it, it happens every single day. When you come to me begging for your education on racism it's exhausting at times, I'm a writer and I'm in the media but I am not a teacher, I didn't do a PGCE at university. I'm sick of the 'well we're not as bad as America' comments, it shouldn't be a competition as to who is more racist. If you can manage Jade then it's not that hard). I'm sick of the weird behaviour and the microaggressions (it's Jada like Jay-da, like the famous actress Jada Pinkett-Smith - please stop calling me Jarda, Jadda and Jade. I'm sick of the 'am I racist if.' questions. This is not a guess, this is based on how often people come to me with questions about if they stepped out of line because of this one thing they said.įor some people I'm the only person of colour that they know, and they take that for me being their expert and the go-to every single time they have a question about race. It's something playful that I'm fine with - what I'm not fine with is when tricky comments come in about race.Ī lot of people don't know if what they're saying is offensive or racist. I get comments on my youthful appearance and height a lot, and no I am not a child just because some children are taller than me. One is that I'm short (150cm, yes that's not even 5ft tall), another is that I look quite young (no, I'm not 14) and the thing that they trip up on is that I'm not white (if you're curious, I'm Caribbean). When someone looks at me there are a few things that they can instantly tell. ![]()
